Bonnet Spring/Latch

I just re-installed my bonnet and aligned it. However, I can't get the spring latch to catch. Everything seems correctly aligned and it looks as though the spring and pin are going in the hole, but it won't catch when I press down on it. I checked the spring-back action on the bonnet release mechanism and everything seems to be functioning properly. Any ideas?

HI Cain, Generally the pins are adjustable as to their length and it sounds like you simply need to lengthen yours by loosening the locking nut and screwing the pin down just a bit until it locks. ---Fwiw---Keoke

Thanks for the info. That would make sense because I replaced the bonnet cone buffers prior to installing the bonnet so the bonnet likely sits higher than it once did.

Thanks

Cain, be careful when you do this, give yourself alot of slack in the adjustment at first. if you lengthen the pin and it doesn't catch, but then you push down hard on the hood and it does catch, it can be a problem to get back open again since it has all the extra force holding it down. Back the pin out a whole bunch at first. When the bonnet latches the hood will most likely then sit a bit high. Readjust it in little increments so you slowly pull the hood back down to where it is level with the fender edges, but not to tight on the latch mechanism.

I found this out the hard way once, had the pin to short and really smacked the hood down. It was way to tight and I couldn't get it back open again. A properly adjusted latch should open very easily without much effort pulling the handle and still line up with the body.

Thanks for the info. Fortunately, I didn't get around to doing this last night or I probably would have done exactly what you mentioned - getting the bonnet too tight.
