BJ8 Trunk Lock Delima

The trunk lid was replaced on our 1965 BJ8. The trunk lock/handle was still on the old lid and when we tried to transfer it to the new lid it does not meet the profile of the lid. There is a small (1/16?) gap at the top and a larger gap at the bottom.

Are the new locks made specifically for the new lids? What are my options?

I think they are all the same. Do you have the correct gasket between lock & lid. This should take up some mismatch. I wouldn't try to bend the lock trim. Maybe two gaskets?

Hi David K, Welcome to the trials and tribulations of the BJ8, you did not say if your trunk lid was a new aftermarket part or a good used one off another car. I just finished with that problem a couple of weeks ago. The proper option is to have the curvature in the trunk lid corrected.Additionally, the shank of the lock may not come all the way through so the retainer washer and screw will fit correctly. The corrective action here is to add small lock washers to the retainer screw until the head when fully tightened just clears the bottom of the lock assy.---Fwiw---Keoke

I believe the trunk lid is a aftermarket replacement. We'll give it another shot with the washers and also see if two gaskets will make a difference.

OK David, One thing I neglected to mention, if the original boot lid was damaged like in a rear end crash the Plinth around the handle may be distorted a bit.For this case a new handle may correct the error. Additionally look inside the boot lid there are two threaded studs that attach the lock handle assy to the boot lid skin if you do not see a couple of hat shaped items over these studs or the screws are missing that may be the only problem you have,-Just a thought---Keoke
