BJ8 hard starting when warmed up

Thought I would post this question in hopes others may have experienced it.
My 66' BJ8 starts no problem when cold soaked sometimes even after sitting weeks in the garage. After a sucessful start and warm up I will go to a gas station(or any stop) and try to start it and the engine acts like its flooded and won't turn over. I have to push start it to get it home! Very frustrating.
Any ideas out there?

Does it start easily cold without the choke? If so, then it is too rich, and possibly is flooding when you're trying to start it hot.

:iagree:

With Randy it is flooded-----Keoke- :yesnod:

If you mean by does not turn over that starter barely spins it, mine did that for the 30 minutes or so after shutting off until it had cooled to a certain temp. Every junction I could find in the feed from both battery terminals, cleaning well helped, but it wasn't until I took the connector terminal that went on the battery off the wire and cleaned each and every strand of exposed cable that I have never had it happen again. good luck, Jay, '65 3000

"Acts like it's flooded" & "won't turn over" seem to me like two different symptoms.

If it won't turn over, or turns slowly then WHY is right - check all electrical connections & starter, solenoid, main cut off switch, etc.

If, on the other hand it spins fast enough but wont start then Randy & Keoke may be right that it's too rich and flooding.

When you push start it does it run fine? or does it stumble & spit & shake for a few minutes before eventually clearing out & running good?

If it stumbles, & spits, coughs after push starting, then you may be experiencing the dreaded vapor lock from the fuel in the float chambers boiling.

The car starts with normal choke when cold and also once push started, it runs and idles evenly. I tried leaning out the mixture while it was running and it restart pretty easy after I shut it off hot.
I will give it another try today and report back..thanks for the suggestions!

" have to push start it to get it home "
....
Sounds like a poor electrical connection in the high current connections:
battery posts, connection to starter solenoid, big wire from solenoid to starter, the braided ground strap from the frame to the engine is loose or making poor connection, the braided ground strap from the battery cutoff switch in the boot, or a bad battery cutoff switch ( internal failure ).

My 100M experiencing the "dreaded vapor lock." How can it be eliminated?

Construct a new heat shield for under the carbs using a piece hardiboard or hardplank to replace the old, thin piece of asbestos which is not doing it's job.

Unless you've added one, the 100 (M included) has no heat shield. Adding one is a good step towards stopping the carb boiling problem.
