Best Classic Car Insurance for NC?

Bruce - "it depends".

I'm very happy with Hagerty for my TR3A. Certainly don't drive anywhere near 5K a year.

But each company has its own limits, mileage restrictions, etc.

Will be interesting to see what other guys recommend.

Tom

I have Hagerty in Seattle, and will probably keep it in SC if they let me

I also have Hagerty here on Long Island. They have no mileage limits, at least not for my TR3. But, there are some things that they do require, just as other companies have their requirements. I haven't had to use them yet (knock on wood), so I can't tell you first hand how good they are. But, there are some on this forum that have had very good experiences dealing with Hagerty when making a claim. And I'm sure there are some people that have had problems, but it seems that at least half the people I meet that have collector cars, have Hagerty insuring them.

Hagerty here too in PA. Never had a claim, but I do hear good things from people who have. Check out two or three insurance companies and it will become clearer for you.

Hagerty here in NJ. Haven't had a claim but also hear good things from those who have. I drive like an old lady though.

I, too, have Hagerty.

Used to have Condon & Skelly who did right by a couple of friends in time of need though I never had a claim. Went with Hagerty due to their reputation and their relationship with Allstate that lets me cover all vehicles (and all else) under my Allstate umbrella policy (with C&S I had to place my umbrella thru a small California carrier -- was nEVER comfortable with that).

Bruce, I have had Grundy for 20 years and they give you some leeway to enjoy the car. The trouble with NC is the car has to be 35 years old before you can use these insurance companies. The Jag can't be on it in NC but could in other states.
Never had a problem and I have 3 cars on it right now.

I have American Collector's here in Connecticut. I've never had a claim which ic certainly the true test on any insurance carrier. I chose American Collector's because they do permit you to drive your car to places other than shows and club events.

I have tried JC Taylor and Hagerty. Taylor was cheaper but had tighter rules (e.g., driving to and from shows or events). Never made a claim with either. I have Hagerty now and like them a lot.

STORY: a friend of mine was at the great Leguna Seca car show a few years ago. He walked up to the Hargarty tent and there was KEITH HAGARTY himself! They chatted and he turned out to be a very nice, down-to-earth fellow. My friend commented that his car was nothing compared to all these million dollar cars, but Keith said something like "it's folks like you that make up the vast bulk of our company and we appreciate your business." Nice touch.

I've also heard of good claims stories with Hagarty.

Most companies will require some sort of mileage limitation and the car must be kept in a locked garage.

I had Hagerty when some knucklehead caused an accident at an intersection and was hit and then slid into my front end broadside. I had two dented fenders and a hood from pallets coming off of the pickup truck that slid into me, which was more damage than the impact on the bumper and front panel. Hagerty had an adjuster at the shop of my choice in 36 hours, an open claim to start the job and order parts and paint and I had an agreed amount and payment in full in eight (8) days.

The adjuster felt that my paint was so nice, but being original, that it would never match, so he paid the shop to remove everything from the exterior and paint the entire car at restoration rates. He also agreed to buy British Heritage sheet metal and I was lucky enough to get NOS fenders and a NOS hood from the TRF inventory. He paid the premium for those parts as well and all shipping.

Here is the full story in pictures of what was done: https://www.74tr6.com/repainting.htm

Hagerty requires you to have one vehicle with regular insurance so that rules out the collector car as a daily driver. And they require the car to be in a locked garage.

That about says it all for Hagerty. Hard to beat that kind of service. However, I've also heard that they will source parts for you if you have trouble finding them. Even so much as to physically legging it out to wherever they may be.

Hagerty requires you to have one vehicle with regular insurance...

Specifically, that's one regular vehicle per licensed driver in the household.

Also, from the Hagerty site:

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:]What are your usage restrictions/guidelines?

Simply put, we want you to enjoy your classic vehicle. While there are some restrictions in the policy, you’re covered for pleasure use, whether it's a drive on a gorgeous summer day, a trip to the ice cream shop, attending club events or going to shows. If you have specific questions about usage, especially if you own a newer vehicle (generally 1990 and newer), we're happy to discuss them with you.[/QUOTE]

That's a restriction I can live with.

Bruce, I have had Hagerty coverage for my Mini since 2005. I chose Hagerty after checking the "acceptable use" conditions for several carriers. Hagerty was the most flexible. The text pasted above by Geo sounds even better than the terms I accepted 7 years ago. I have not had to file a claim with Hagerty so I cannot offer claims experience like Paul did.

I did look at other carriers about 2 years ago, not because I was unhappy but because I wanted to know how the insurers compared after 5 years. I stayed with Hagerty. I don't think you will be unhappy with them.

Wayne, the 35 year old rule applies to inspections but I don't think it applies to insurance.

Just called my Hagerty guy and asked him about my move to SC.
He said don't worry about it until I retitle the car.
And he said "If you retitle the car"
Has said that with a little Ahem in his voice

Hi guys, I'm looking to get a Austin Healey when the weather perks up again in the UK and was just wondering if anyone knows of any good specialist insurance companies?

Ive had a little trouble in the past and looking to get some friendly advice.

You might want to start a new post (click 'New Topic' upper left) with a subject like 'Best Classic Car Insurance for UK?' as your countrymen may not read a post about insurance in North Carolina.

Oh, and welcome to the Forum.

I have USAA as my regular car insurance and they recommended american collector car insurance, I also have liability insurance thru USAA, so far they are great but so far I have never made a claim either

we have quite a few cars, but the one taking the most frequent ride lately is Maggie........(mga twin cam) all our values are agreed, no crappy restrictions and for $ 64.00 more yearly My towing is good for 176 miles a journey for any and all insured. we also have an excellent friend who works & writes for their magazine-Jonathan Stein. He is both eloquint and helpful as he is also an owner of MG twin cam and I had a whopper of a claim!! Randi C. Lee
