Battery turn off switch

I know this is a stupid question and I am sure I know the answer, but better safe than sorry. Since my recently purchased 1966 BJ8 is positive ground does that mean the cable going to the turn off switch is negative? The other cable goes into the back of the trunk to I do not know where. I assume that is the positive cable connecting to the chassis or something metal for a ground. I am getting ready to hook up a "battery tender JR" and I do not want to screw up. If I am correct then the battery tender black cable would go to the cable connected to the turn off switch and the red cable would connect to the cable going into the back of the trunk. I cannot see any markings on the battery.

Thanks

If it's positive ground the + side goes to the cut off switch then to ground.
The - side goes to the starter solenoid.I would advise you to pull a cable on the battery to see if you can locate the markings on the batterry to confirm if it is in fact connected positive ground as original.Bob

I just finished looking it up in the workshop manual. It appears the cable going into the trunk connects at the solenoid like you said. Why is a shut off valve necessary for a ground wire? I will take your advice and confirm the cable is connected to the positive side of the battery.

Thanks for your help.

It disconnects the battery from ground,no power no chance of a short that could cause a fire. Also there is a small wire that goes from the cut off switch that when you cut it to the off position it grounds the points out so no one (that doesn't know how to unhook it ) can jump start your car by hooking another power source to it. Your welcome, I'd turn that disconnect to off while the tender is on it . I keep mine off all the time unless I am going to run the car.

Will do. To recap. If the vehicle is positive ground(positive battery cable is connected to the cut off switch)then I connect the battery tender red clip to the cable that connects to the cutoff switch. I then connect the battery tender black clip to the negative cable which is working its way through my trunk to the solenoid. I then plug the charger into the ac outlet. Correct?

Well sjpcpa, just in case ,The "RED CABLE" goes to the battery terminal that has the cable that connects to the cut off switch. The "Black CABLE" goes to the battery terminal that has the lead which "goes into the back of the trunk"---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif
