TR4/4A Assembling Transmission to Engine--Vice/Versa

Remember that little trick of inserting "headless" bolts into the rear engine block, where the transmission bolts go? Well, I'm trying to remember--is that done only when removing he transmission to avoid excessive weight on the input shaft while maneuvering, or is it also done when reattaching the transmission to the engine, in this case just as a guide?

I've done it on both removal and install... and about to do it again. It was Randall who put me on to it.

As I recall (it was 17 years ago) for the install I got the box cradled in place then fitted the long studs (headless bolts) for alignment in the home stretch.

Last time I wrassled it out & in solo... this time around I'll be using an engine hoist and a big C shaped arrangement of iron pipe to take the weight of the thing.

PS - Slice a screwdriver slot into the end of the stud to make it easy to thread it in and out.

I can swing over tomorrow, Monday, or next Sunday or anytime after to help reassemble if you could use more hands and brute muscle. Just let me know and I’ll toss on my grubby clothes.

3 long studs in the top help line up the box nicely then have it in gear so you can turn the gearbox output so the main shaft engages with the clutch plate. If the clutch is new make sure it fits the gearbox first !!!
Slotting or squaring the head of the studs is a good idea to aid removal.

make sure you have the fixed dowls in their places toothese stop gearbox movement. The bolts just tighten the engine gearbox together.

and many hands make light work.

Gearbox in gear is important … spin the output shaft until things snap together.

My experience - basis doing it once - is a little bit of wrangling, followed by a satisfying “click” when it slides together beautifully. It helps to have the rear of the gearbox supported at the right height (especially with heavy OD), and able to slide forward at sane height.
