Rick, have you considered converting to tilt forward? Heaviest part of the bonnet (front end & head lamp assemblies) will be at or near the pivot point making the amount you lift greatly reduced.

Front tilt on the steel bonnet will be light/easy/cheap/fast. Imagine how much effort it would take to get one of those fiberglass bonnets mounted/reinforced for rear hinge or front tilt...
Just saw this listing on Craigslist for three Bugeye bodyshells with hoods. $500 each or $1000 for all three. 'Thought maybe you could find one good hood out of all three, but you'd need to get photos.
