A new car for Doc E........

Hmmm? A red Escort! Hey, I have one of those!
(well OK, not exactly one of *those*).

Anyway, nice car.
The RS 2000 has the 2L "Pinto" engine with about 100 hp. Decent, but not a rocket.

I actually saw a real Twin Cam Escort at Watkins Glen a few weeks ago. Nice and making all the right noises. Again, not a rocket, but with a decent, 1600 cc Twin Cam with about 110 hp.

The 2.0L Pinto is capable of much more HP than some
would imagine, I should know, I've been "playing"
with them for nearly 30 years, and have seen them
make more than 200HP at 7500rpm...

is that really the Pinto - don't rear end it - Pinto that I'm thinking of or does it take on a different meaning across the pond - kind of like bonnet & stuff?

Steve, I'd have bet good money that was in Essex, but it doesn't look that way.

Last Escort I had was a 1600, cost me 75 quid. Looking at that I should have kept it...

Pro: In-line drivetrain as the gods intended.

Con: It ain't a MEXICO!!

...drat.

No, the only similarity is in the engine......the European Escort was a completely different animal, thankfully.

Thankfully, indeed. Biggest abomination I ever saw was a Pinto Estate. Faux wood panels 'n trim. 'orrible! Not to mention th' mushy suspension, overweight chassis/body and resultant anemic performance. feh.

Oh come on, I'm not sure that's even close to the biggest abomination - pacer - yugo - aztek - slant trunk caddy etc etc /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/driving.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/pukeface.gif

Actually Doc,they were called a Pinto Squire Wagon.
You should sell your Pacer woody wagon & buy one!

No no no, the "Pinto" engine is not related to
the exploding Ford Pinto, other than the fact it
has the same name. It was first offered in the
Escort/Cortina/Capri, then the Ford Pinto because
it fit the requirement... being larger and more
powerful than the 1.6L Kent...

here's the REALLY nasty Pinto. the California Cruiser Edition. This was an option right from Ford this way!
I ALMOST had one of these. Wish I had it now. It was SOOOOOO hidious.

Not the car, but the "Pinto" engine is part of the same T88 "Pinto" series that was used in German and British Fords.

Euro Fords got various, smaller versions of the engine (I think 1.6L was the most popular) but here in the US, the T88 came in 2.0L and 2.3L versions.

And for the record, I always thought the US Ford Pinto got a bad rap. The gas tank filler was a bad design, but it passed the federal standards at the time and the affected cars were recalled and fixed.
One of the real results of the sensational news reports of the Pinto gas tanks fires is that it encouraged people to think that small cars were unsafe. Unfortunately, many folks returned to driving road-barges, just as the fuel crisis of the '70s was encouraging Americans to buy smaller cars. Too bad.
There are plenty of rack-body and dump body trucks sold today that look like their fuel fillers are even more unsafe to my eye.
I had two Pintos and other family members owned them too. Decent but unexciting cars, I though they were far better than the comparable Chevy Vegas or AMC Gremlins. Handled far better than VWs of the day and better looking than the some of the hideous Datsuns. I had a 2.0L 4 speed and later a 4-speed, 1600 Kent-powered version.

Ben!!!!!
Honest, I'm only 25 minutes away from London. I'll go pick up that Pinto for you and bring it across to NY

I'm sure Annie would love the trip.

Just ask,

Actually, the 2.0L was at the top of the heap for the Euro
engines, the 1.6L Pinto is popular, used all the way into the
mid '80s in Capris, while the 2.0L Pinto was also the block
of choice for the YB Cosworth. The American engineered 2.3L
is a bit of an anchor, as it weighs nearly 100lbs more than
the 2.0L. And doesn't make any more HP...

hahahaha. I must have missed it. By the time I checked that site, it no longer comes up.
Darn it! hehehehehehe
