67 BJ8 Turn signal indicators

Offline
Anyone give any guidence, when using turn signals, both the right and left dash indicators blink, but only the correct exterior lite (Right or Left) operate properly. Is this normal or do I have a problem with the wiring (or other) in the dash?

Larry: I think your wiring is suspect. Probably the first place to go would be the turn signal relay, or flasher, unit. Check the wiring there against the wiring diagram and see if something is miplaced or if you have wires shorted together somewhere. I don't think both should flash when you use your signals. Larry -
My turn signals operate the same as you describe, on occasion. Usually it is when the car has been sitting for a while. I have noted that both dash indicators sometimes flash, and I have verified that the outside lights are flashing correctly. It always has cured itself before I got around to investigating the reason, so I don't worry about it. It's probably varying resistance in the circuits due to humidity or something. I have a relatively new wiring harness, and I know that all connections are pretty clean and tight.

Larry...my 1967 BJ8 operates correctly...both inside signals work and work with the corresponding outside light...I think you must have a wiring problem...good luck...

Larry,

I had a periodic problem with my electrical system. The symptoms were; When it was raining or if I washed my car or dampness my turn signals would stop working but not always.I believe I saw both left and right turn signal lights lit on the dash. The turn signals would flash rapidly at times. Other times , my tach would bounce. along with turn signals flashing and other times turn signals not working. A number of symptoms in different combinations at different times. This occured from 98 to early 2000. I checked all my connections at my signal lights etc. I assumed it must be a grounding issue(wet). I also checked my fuses and my fuse holder. My fuse holder was if not original, old. I decided to replace my fuse holder (1st Qtr. 2000) and I have not had this problem since. Perhaps a connection to the fuse holder etc or the fuse holder. Of course now that I told this story I am sure , the problem will come back.

Hello Larry,
I don't know Healeys very well, but there are two types of indicator relays that could be used on your car.
The simple one has two terminals, one connected to the supply via a fuse (normally) green cable, and the other connects to the indicator switch light green cable. The indicator switch connects one or the other side indicator lamps. If your dash repeaters are connected to the relay connection (light green) rather than individually to the right or left side then they will both flash when you signal.
The second type has a third terminal which feeds the dash repeater lamps and each individual lamp is earthed by the indicator switch when you select a turn.
I hope this helps you understand the system a bit better.

Alec
