4.22 gears!

I've asked this question before with no response. I understand that there is an MG rear with 4.22 gears. What car had/has this rear? If so, is it a banjo type that the gears can be used in a T series MG housing? PJ

I know a Spridget had a 4.22 diff, they were the stock diff for the 948 powered cars, never heard of a 4.22 for the larger cars, but then I don't know everyhting, so it could exist for the larger cars. I know on my MGB race car I got several diffs for it prepped for racing, I've got a 3.9, a 4.1 and 4.5.

Hap
All Spridgets had 4.22 up until the '69 year when they all went to 3.9.

To be technical, Bill, 68 and one half. Got 3.9 out of a 68 past the serial number change.

Kurt.

4.3,4.1 and 3.9 (big size, not Spridget) all fit the MGA/early MGB diff that also fit the early MG's (TF only I think).

And 4.55, 4.88 and 5.13 as well (the last makes one killer hill climb diff!)

My TF has the 4.88, but it's going to get taller gears. I would like to have a 4.1 but heard of the 4.22 and was curious if it could be converted to a TF rear. I'm now assuming it's not heavy enough. Thanks to all. PJ

No, 5 speeds are out! The car must look original.

Yep, all 1275 Midgets came with the 3.9.

Paul, the 4.1 ad 4.3 are both choices in the larger diffs, now I dont know diddly squat about a T series cars, but I guessing from what you are saying a the MGA/B banjo diffs are able to swap directly in the T series rear end housing. Also another thing to think about, the earlier MGA banjo diff had a fewer spline count on the axles and spinder gears, then later MGA and MGB had a finer spline count, so in some case spider gears swaps are needed for which ever set up you have.

Hap, I'm not sure about the whole procedure for making the swap. I know there are various shims that have to be changed on the pinion along with the carrier bearings for alignment and very possible the spiders and axle drive gears to accommodate the T axles. Quite a procedure. PJ
