MGB 1977 MGB Exhaust Leak

A friend of mine has a 1977 MGB that had an exhaust leak between the exhaust manifold and the catalytic convertor. The gasket has been changed 2 times now with Victoria British gaskets and both only lasted less than 200 miles before they started leaking. A mechanic thinks that the gasket supplied (not metallic) is not the right one for this car and that a metal one should be the proper one. Any ideas on what the next step should be? Changing that gasket is a very time comsuming and unpleasant task. Moss appears to have a new type of gasket for this application. Is this what I need?
