Cup holder in a Healey..against the grain

Roger,

One more question. What did you use for the " donor " cup holder ? Where did you get it ?
I think I will try to make one like yours.
Thanks,

Ed

Looks great! Would definitely like to know how you made it and where you acquired your parts. The wife's been complaining about no cup holder and we all know how important the WH (wife happiness) factor is. Thanks!

I was at Roger's house today, providing my own brand of inspiration and encouragement as he installed this cup holder in his BJ8. I just want to say that this is one slick setup... very stealthy and a simple, straight forward installation. It will only work on a BJ8 however.

The cup holder itself is a well made unit that is supplied by Mercedes Benz. Many of you may want to take a different road because of the cost. But for those crazy souls with a desire for pure stealth and the ultimate-Healey-cup- holder convenience - this is it.
Well done Roger.

Hi Ed,

Yes it is attached to the glove box.
I certainly know what your thinking. Cardboard?

My glove box is new. I don't know what it is made of, but if it is cardboard, it is really hard.
Most of the load is secured at the front of the glove box where it is screwed into the wood face.

I used JB weld to glue the aluminum beams to the underside of the cup holder housing. Then screwed sheet metal screws through the hard glove box "cardboard" into the aluminum beams. I used washers as shims to level it.

The cup holder is a VW part.
About $70.00.
Who says you can't put a price on cool and pleasing the "WH".

The part is very strong and my installation is very secure. I certainly would not want this to break lose and spill hot coffee on my passenger.

I must have tried 8 different cup holders from Audi, VW, Camery, Hundi, Corrolla, Porsche and Honda.

Trust me, I spend a lot of time with trial and error before I make my final choice permanent.
Ask my friend Randy.
Cheers, Roger

OK Roger, it looks good. Did you add large washers inside the glove box to distribute the load of the sheet metal screws. I would think it prudent to do so. To the rest of the crew here the critical point is, Roger used a new glove box. Most of ours which have not been replaced will be sagging quite a bit on the bottom. a stiffening plate [ ~1/8" Aluminum sheet] for the old ones to straighten out the bottom could be used without compromising the installation.----Keoke

Hi Roger,
That looks great, and I definitely need my coffee. Do you still have a part number for that thing? I bought a new glovebox, but it was crap. I wound up making an aluminum glovebox, so installation of a cup holder should be a snap.
Thanks.

Well Randy that certainly is impressive. I wonder if it could be installed in other Healeys, say under the parcel shelf?

Thanks, Jackie aka Johnny,
From Randy aka Roger.

If the parcel shelf is wide enough, then yes.

Some folks here have asked what the part number is.
Sorry to say I don't know the part number to the one I installed, for it is an older style.

The replacement VW part number for the current cup holder is... 1J0 858 601D

I purchased my older version on Ebay for $70.00
The new cup holder sells retail for $101.42.

Here is a photo of the current VW cup holder.
If you have any questions on exactly how I installed it and what was involved to do so, please feel free to PM me.
Cheers, Roger

Hi Greg,The VW cup holder used by Roger can be found in 00-to- 05 VW Jetta & Golf' cars. Check E-Bay.--Keoke

Roger,
Thanks for doing the leg work ( research ) on this. I have found that the " looking " for just the right part, fastener, switch, etc when making " modern improvements " to our cars is what takes the most time and effort.

Gentlemen, thank you both. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thankyousign.gif

Apologies to all for stating that this part was from a Mercedes. That must have been one of the others that Roger rejected.
Cheers.

Hi guys,
I have had some questions about how the cup holder is made and held in place. Seems my previous photos on Flicker are no longer posted. Here are some, that should stay on this site.

The VW cup holder I used is an older design (part number 1J0 858 601) that has been replaced by VW with part number 1J0 858 601D (first photo)

The newer case is the same size and both work by simply pushing on the front when closed and it will slide out and lock in place. Lift the bottom cup holder bracket and push the front in to slide it back in the case and out of sight.

Cheers,
Roger

I mounted one of these on the tunnel of my 100 (I have a Toyota five-speed with the shifter in the rear-most position).
It is made by Cupholders Plus and it is attached via one #14 oval head tapping screw w/trim washer.

Hi all,
I know, sports cars should not have cup holders.
But what about coffee cup holders, to all those coffee drinkers like me.

I have been tinkering with different ways to install a cup holder. Somewhere that it will be out of the way, yet open up to become a cup holder. I am thinking of installing it under the glove box on my BJ8, flush with the front lip.

Car companies are always coming up with amazing "Swiss Jack Knife" cup holders. Look here says the sales man. You want a cup holder? He pushes on the simple looking flat piece of plastic and it opens up (like a kids transformer toy) to accommodate all of the following items... at the same time. Large and small cup holder, 7-11 Big Gulp cup holder, cell phone holder, flower holder, pen holder, pad holder, wallet, purse, clutch, handbag holder, trash container and doubles as a third row seat.

So I have been looking at the holders these car manufactures are impressing us with and wondering if I could use one of theirs in my Healey. Of course it will take a little modification to attach it, but I think it could be done. .

Any MacGyver's pulled this off yet?
Ideas?
Roger
